Kavita Krishnamurty Subramaniam

" . . . an award winning singer with the voice and versatility to bring the house down and the audience up on its feet . . . 1700 songs in several Indian languages and an awesome list of film hits"

When I play, initially we are aware of the audience, the hall, the surroundings. As I start playing in and go deeper in Raga improvisations or whatever it is, it gets to a point, we practically forget where we are - we feel in a way we are nowhere, the sound itself takes over.

We have this immense inner peace which I cannot express or describe; one has to feel it. I feel that peace when I start playing and completely get lost in the sound itself" - Dr. L. Subramaniam

Dr. L. Subramaniam...

Song bird Kavitha KrishnamurthyDr. L. Subramaniam virtually needs no introduction to any classical audience worldwide. He has been able to reach across cultural lines to reach diverse audiences from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and nationalities. Dr. Subramaniam is the only musician who has performed and recorded Carnatic classical music, Western classical music, both orchestral and as a soloist, fusion works – in other words, music across the board. He has collaborated with a wide range of some of the greatest musicians from different genres, including jazz, occidental, jugalbandis, world music, and global fusion.

Not only is he the most outstanding Indian classical violinist, he is also an exceptional composer who has established himself as the foremost Indian composer in the realm of East –West orchestral composition. In 1983, he composed ‘ The double Concerto for Violin and Flute’ combining western scales and micro intervals of Indian music. Over the years he has written and created works for the worlds greatest orchestras, The New York Philharmonic Orchestra (‘Fantasy of Vedic Chants’) the Swiss Romande Orchestra (‘Turbulence’), The Kirov Ballet (‘Shanti Priya’), The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (‘The Concerto for two violins’), The Berlin Opera(‘Global Symphony’),

His most recent achievement and honour is to be invited to compose the music score for the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Ustad Sultan Khan...

Ustad Sultan Khan is one of the foremost Sarangi players of India, renowned for the emotional depth of his playing, and his extraordinary technical and melodic control over this difficult string instrument. He is one of the representatives of the Indore Gharana, made famous by Ustad Amir Khan. A scion of illustrious lineage of sarangi players, beginning his training at age seven, he learned the rudiments from his father, Ustad Gulab Khan who was both an accomplished sarangi player and a vocalist. A little wonder then that the Ustad like his father, always punctuates his concerts with vocal Amir khani nuances. When he picks up the sarangi to lilting Sargams where he has left off vocally, the succeeding notes emerge in continuation as though the sarangi sings. His systematic Badhat, exquisite Gamaks, and intricate Tans make his performances unique and soulful.

Ustad Sultan Khan gave his first performance at the All-India Conference at the age of 11, and since then has become to be recognized on an international scale, performing along with Pandit Ravi Shankar on former Beatle, George Harrison’s 1974 Dark Horse World Tour. He has won numerous musical awards, including being a recipient twice of the Sangeet Natya Academy Award, also know as the President's Award, as well as being a recipient of the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra, and the American Academy of Artists Award in 1998. In 1997 he had the honor and privilege of playing for Prince Charles' 50th birthday celebration.

Ustad Sultan Khan also has composed and recorded music for films, such as In Custody, and Gandhi. But, his true devotion and love lie in playing the classical music of India.

Kavitha Krishnamoorthi Subramaniam...

Song bird Kavitha KrishnamurthyBorn in Delhi, Sharda ( her real name) was exposed to classical music and dance from a very young age. Her mother was always keen that she learn music. Having learnt Hindustani music and Rabindra Sangeet, Kavitha was introduced to the cinema world by Jaya Chakravarthy, actress Hema Malini’s mother, in Mumbai. Kavitha’s first recording was as a child, a duet with Lata Mangkeshkar, in 1971, for a Bengali film. From this point, Kavitha’s career kept spiralling and has not stopped since. Working initially with the famous composers Lakshmikant – Pyarelal, she has to date recorded more than 1500 songs in several Indian languages, namely, Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya, Assamese, Kanada, and Malayalam.

Some of her most popular hit songs are ‘Nayak – nahin’ ( Khal- Nayak), 1942 – A Love Story, ‘Tu Cheez badi hei Mast mast’ ( Mohra), ‘Aanke Maare’ (Tere Mere Sapne), ‘Tu Hi Re’ ( Bombay), ‘Ishq Bina’ ( Taal), ‘Aankhon ki gusthakiyaan’ (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) – the list goes on. Her participation in Ismail Durbar’s ‘Devdas’, is perhaps the most recent favourite among Hindi film song lovers throughout the world.

Kavitha’s live concerts have drawn in throngs of audiences in every major city around the globe. Working with the doyens of the music industry, such as AR Rahman, Jatin Lalit, Viju Shah, Rajeesh Roshan, Anu Malik and others, her vast experience and rich voice carries her as perhaps the most sought after playback singer today.
